About 15 km southeast of Rotterdam are the 19 historic windmills of Kinderdijk, which are among the most famous sights in the Netherlands. They were built in the 18th century and served to pump out the water from dywn areas in order to make the soil agriculturally usable.  You can walk, bike or take a boat to see these wonderful windmills.  Only three are museums, the rest have people living in them and all have a miller's diploma.
