Day One:   Embark from Basel, Swizerland.   At Basel you will see architectural landmarks and experience its international flair.   A cultural center, it is filled with world-class museums.  The extra two nights could be a great way to explore more of this great city.

Day Two:  Enjoy Breisach, Germany.  This is the gateway to the Black Forest.  Here you will see renowned mountain landscape, rolling meadows, and dense forests.  Visit a local workshop to see a cuckoo clock making demonstration.  Have free time to explore Breisach, or choose an excursion to the Alsatian town of Colmar.

Day Three:  Dock in Kehl and disembark for a guided tour of Strausbourg, France.  See the European Parliament and tour the interior of the city's famed cathedral.  Explore this Alsatian city's blend of French and German cultures during a free afternoon.  See exquisite churches, medieval covered bridges, beautiful parks and lovely Art Nouveau and modernist architecture.

Day Four:  Arrive in Mannheim for a journey to Heidelberg.   There see Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386.  Visity the imposing ruins of Heidelberg Castle; then continue with a walking tour through the Old Town to Heidelberg's renowned gates.   Rejoin your ship in Speyer and take time to look around.  You dock in full view of the imposing Romanesque cathedral, a UNESCO site.  Built in the 11th Century, it's soaring interior features graceful rows of sandstone arches and a large stained-glass window installed in the western facade during a later Gothic period.

Day Five:  Koblenz & Rudesheim, Germany.   Spend free time in the pedestrian-only Drosselgasse.   See castles overlook the river from hilltop locations as you cruise the Middle Rhine, also a UNESCO site.  Disembark to tour 700-year-old Marksburg Castle.

Day Six:  Cologne, Germany is a justly famous city.  Stroll through  Old Town past St. Martin's Church, and spend time inside Cologne's Dom, a remarkable Gothic cathedral whose construction was begun in 1248 and only completed in 1880.  Explore dockside taverns, cafes and shops on your own.

Day Seven:  Today brings you to Kinderdijk, another UNESCO site.  This ingenious area with a network of windmills and other flood management devices make living in The Netherlands possible.   Visit a working windmill to see its mechanisms and living quarters.

Day Eight:  Arrive in Amsterdam to disembark your ship.  The afternoon is yours to explore the city and perhaps visit the Anne Frank House.  Finally, travel to the airport for your flight back home as you savor a magical week spent on the Rhine.
